Equipment configurations

Scroll-compressor chillers

For smaller and modular installations, scroll-compressor packages may be considered with staged compressors, independent refrigerant circuits and integrated controls, according to available manufacturer models.

Screw-compressor chillers

Screw-compressor packages can be assessed for larger or variable cooling loads, with unloading or variable-speed options where offered. Selection should account for full-load and part-load conditions, chilled-water temperature, outdoor ambient and electrical conditions.

Low-temperature glycol and process chillers

For process applications below normal comfort-cooling temperatures, the chilled-fluid type, glycol concentration, minimum leaving temperature, freezing margin and load cycling determine the refrigeration configuration. Alternative refrigerant arrangements and redundancy can be reviewed where necessary.

Condenser and evaporator configuration

Air-cooled condenser coils and axial fans reject heat to outside air. Space for unobstructed airflow, maintenance clearance, recirculation avoidance and local ambient conditions is essential. The evaporator may be a plate or shell-and-tube design depending on fluid, capacity, fouling risk and manufacturer offering.

Electrical, controls and protection

  • State the available voltage, phase and frequency, preferred power factor requirements and allowable starting current.
  • Identify required chilled-fluid setpoint stability, flow interlock, remote enable, BMS connectivity and alarm reporting.
  • Confirm compressor and refrigerant-circuit protections, freeze protection, water flow monitoring and service access with the selected supplier.

Information for selection

  • Required cooling capacity in kW or TR at the stated rating conditions.
  • Fluid name, concentration, required inlet/outlet temperatures, flow rate and allowable pressure drop.
  • Maximum outdoor dry-bulb temperature, elevation, installation position and air discharge restrictions.
  • Power supply, working schedule, load profile, sound limits, footprint and special coatings if required.
