Water-Cooled Chillers

Water-Cooled Chillers

Enquiry-based selection of commercial and industrial water-cooled refrigeration packages. Water-cooled chillers reject condenser heat to a circulating water system, commonly served by a cooling tower. The chiller and heat-rejection system should be assessed together.

Compressor and system configurations

Scroll and modular chillers

Packaged and modular scroll units may be considered for smaller and staged loads. Evaluate the required number of operating modules, independent refrigerant circuits, turndown and plant-room access.

Screw chillers

Screw-compressor systems are assessed for medium and large cooling duties and varying load profiles. Ask about capacity-control method, minimum permitted load, evaporator and condenser pressure losses, and part-load energy performance.

Centrifugal and oil-free configurations

For larger duties, centrifugal or magnetic-bearing oil-free equipment may be evaluated where a matching supplier configuration exists. Verify operating lift, minimum load, surge-control requirements, electrical supply and maintenance conditions.

Low-temperature glycol chillers

Low-temperature applications need accurate glycol concentration, design fluid temperature, flow, minimum permissible fluid temperature and freezing margin. Refrigerant selection and evaporator arrangement must be assessed for the actual operating envelope.

Condenser-water and cooling-tower integration

Condenser entering-water temperature depends on the cooling-tower design wet-bulb, tower approach, circulating-water condition and operating strategy. For equipment selection, state chilled-water flow and inlet/outlet temperatures, condenser-water inlet/outlet temperatures and flow, and allowed hydraulic pressure drops.

Controls and installation considerations

  • Electrical voltage, phase and frequency; starting limits and available electrical capacity.
  • Full-load and part-load duty, operating schedule and lead/lag or standby requirements.
  • BMS interface, alarm reporting, pump interlocks and temperature control expectations.
  • Water quality, filtration, tube-access clearance, equipment dimensions and lifting route.

Data required for quotation

  • Cooling capacity (kW or TR) at stated design conditions.
  • Chilled-water inlet/outlet temperatures, fluid flow and glycol content if any.
  • Condenser-water inlet/outlet temperatures, flow and cooling tower information.
  • Required refrigerant, application, ambient/site conditions, footprint and documentation.
