Practical reference notes for discussing cooling tower, chiller, refrigeration and fan requirements. These explanations are introductory selection guidance; use project-specific calculations, current manufacturer data and applicable standards for equipment approval.
Cooling Tower Range and Approach
Range = hot-water inlet temperature − cold-water outlet temperature. Approach = cold-water outlet temperature − entering-air wet-bulb temperature. A smaller approach generally requires more demanding heat and mass transfer duty; the achievable result depends on design wet-bulb, airflow, water flow, fill and site conditions.
Heat Rejection and Water Flow
The sensible water-side heat rate is Q = ṁ × cp × (T_hot − T_cold), using consistent units and water properties at the operating condition. Cooling tower evaporative heat and mass transfer, water loss and ambient air properties require further assessment; this equation alone does not select a tower.
Airflow and Static Pressure
A fan must be selected at the intersection of its pressure–flow performance curve and the installation’s system resistance curve. Free-air volume is not the airflow delivered through a coil, fill pack, louvers or ductwork. Confirm rotational direction, operating speed, air density, motor power and sound requirements.
Closed-Circuit Cooling and Condenser Duties
For closed-circuit cooling, provide the process fluid and concentration, inlet/outlet temperatures, flow, ambient design conditions and allowable pressure drop. For refrigeration condensers, identify refrigerant, condensing temperature or pressure, total heat rejection, design ambient and material/safety constraints.
Replacement Parts Checklist
Include the existing make/model, component dimensions, photos, material, operating temperature, water quality, installation details and any required certificates or standards. For fans and motors include voltage, phase, frequency, speed, current, motor power, IP rating and mounting details.
